Energy Recovery, Inc. (ERI) was established in 1992 with the goal of making seawater desalination affordable world-wide by dramatically reducing energy costs. ERI manufactures ultra-high efficiency recovery products and technology, specifically the ERI PX Pressure Exchanger® (PX®) device; that are among the enabling technologies driving the rapid growth in seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination, and are helping to make desalination affordable worldwide.
Based on a rotary positive displacement pump principle, the PX® devices recover energy from the high-pressure waste stream of SWRO desalination systems at up to 98% efficiency. This technology can reduce the cost of water production to less than half the cost without energy recovery.
The PX Pressure Exchanger device is simple and has only one moving part, providing years of continuous service with no scheduled maintenance or downtime. Its critical components are made of tough, non-corrosive, engineered corundum (aluminum oxide). PX units installed since 1997 have proven the endurance of this ceramic construction by requiring no routine maintenance when operated for tens of thousands of hours in tough seawater environments.
Today, PX® technology has emerged as the industry standard solution for seawater desalination, specified by over 80 OEMs worldwide with over 6,000 PX® devices installed or contracted in plants worldwide, significantly reducing the cost to produce over 5.2 million m3/day of fresh water, and saving customers an estimated 500 MW of energy or $352 million a year in operating costs.
Real MW savings and unmatched product support has made ERI the largest ERD manufacturer in the world today. > more
